Choose the right load class

AS/NZS 3996:2019 Load Classifications

Application
Class
Ultimate Design load
Rationale
Footpaths
Class A
10kN
Pedestrians and cyclists.
Residential Driveway
Class B
80kN
Light vehicles and occasional delivery vans.
Public Carparks
Class C
150kN
Slow-moving commercial vehicles and medium traffic.
Road Crossings
Class D
240kN
Frequent heavy traffic and high-speed impact.
Industrial / Docks
Class E
400kN
Commercial and heavy industrial.
Wharves / Airport taxiways
Class F, G
600kN - 900kN
Extreme wheel loads and heavy machinery.

Note 1: Classifications are based on AS/NZS 3996:2019. Nominal wheel loads are provided as a guide only. The final selection of the appropriate load class remains the responsibility of the project’s consulting engineer.

Note 2: Hyvol grates are tested to AS/NZS 3996:2019. For structural applications, our Class B and Class C units typically satisfy the requirements for AS/NZS 1170.1 Type F & G activities. Contact our team for specific structural load certifications.

Choose the right catchment area

To specify the correct Hyvol system, ensure your selected channel meets both the structural load requirement (AS/NZS 3996) and the hydraulic catchment capacity below:

Hydraulic Capacity & Catchment Selection Guide

Use the guide below to match your project's total surface catchment area to the correct Hyvol drainage system.

Max Catchment
Area
Hydraulic Flow
Rate
Recommended
System
Primary Application
Up to 350 m2
9.0 L/sec
Residential driveways, patios, urban footways.
Up to 500 m2
13.5 L/sec
Light commercial car parks, wide residential driveways.
Up to 500 m2
13.5 L/sec
HY 200 C
Commercial delivery bays, gas stations, shopping malls.
Up to 850 m2
25.0 L/sec
Industrial courtyards, large hardstands, high-rainfall hubs.

Technical Specifier Note: Catchment capacities are indicative only and based on a conservative average rainfall intensity of 100 mm/hr. For projects with steep gradients, specialized continuous run-off lengths, or strict local council overland flow requirements, please contact our engineering team for custom hydraulic calculations and sizing verification.

Supply Chain & Availability Certainty

Because Hyvol is 100% locally manufactured in New Zealand and stocked nationwide via our merchant partners - including Hynds, PlaceMakers, ITM, Plumbing World and Atlas Concrete - specifiers can guarantee clients short material lead times and uninterrupted regional supply chain security.

Get The Installation Right

Long-term performance relies on good site execution. Our installation framework aligns with New Zealand Building Codes and regional council asset protection standards to ensure a seamless, compliant hand-over.

  • 1.

    SAFETY & UTILITIES

Always locate underground services via BeforeU Dig prior to trenching.

  • 2.

    ENCASEMENT

Use a minimum of 20MPa structural concrete around the channel base and sides.

  • 3.

    INTERNAL BRACING

For heavy-duty HY 200 C and HY 300 C runs, grates must be bolted into place before pouring concrete to prevent wall deflection.

  • 4.

    FLUSH FINISH

Ensure the surrounding pavement is finished completely flush with the top edge of the HYVOL® grate to eliminate trip hazards.
